Our Mission

At Masjid Al Islahi, our mission is to provide a supportive, accepting, and engaging community for all members of the Muslim community in Baton Rouge, LA. We are committed to helping those who are in need, including non-Muslims—whether it be through providing donations or support to the poor, needy, and orphans through our community pantry, or by making an inclusive space where people can come together to receive religious and spiritual guidance. Above all else, we seek to foster unity and hospitality within our city.

Masjid Al Islahi is a safe haven for the entire ummah (community) of Rasulullah (SAW), especially reverts to Islam. Many of these reverts come from cultures where tattoos, piercings, jewelry, and hip-hop clothing are the norm. But when they go to other masjids, feelings of judgment and discomfort may arise in other members of the Ummah.

So, Masjid Al Islahi seeks to establish an environment where these reverts can learn and practice pure Islam from the Quran and Sunnah. This can include understanding the true meanings of their traditions and how it aligns with their newfound faith - just as Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught his companions when they first embraced Islam.

We strive to be a tremendous asset to our community. Some of our planned and current activities include teaching the children the fundamentals of Islam, Arabic language, recitation of Quran, the life of Prophet Muhammad and his Companions, etiquette, good hygiene and religious supplications.

The youth will also have circles of learning with their peers to conduct and discuss issues relevant to their ages and environments that are oriented in a way to integrate Islamic education along with their activities. Moreover, scholarly women teachers will teach the women the fundamentals of Islam including topics specifically pertaining to women's development. They will also teach about pious Muslim women, Arabic language, recitation of Quran, Quranic exegesis, etiquette, the life of Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions, family/communal life and good hygiene. Also, the Imam and other scholars will teach the men the same things that the women will learn.

The Imam performs weddings upon request, and he leads religious prayers in the masjid including 5 daily prayers, Friday prayer, Ramadan Tarawih prayers, EID celebration prayers. The community members help the poor and needy of every race, Muslim and non-Muslim, in all walks of life by giving food donations, clothing and toiletries. Also, the poor and needy are given financial charity for life necessities by the Treasurer and President of the Masjid. This is funded by donations to the Masjid.

Furthermore, the Muslim community members are establishing brotherhood and sisterhood amongst ourselves and the community at large by getting to know our neighbors and being involved in the community and finding out their needs individually and collectively. The Imam, Majlis Shura, and the Muslim community strive to establish a safe and violence free community and environment by setting a good example and educating others about the harms and dangers of drugs, alcohol, gangs, bullying, etc. through lectures and community outreach.

Finally, educating the community about the Creator of the Heavens and Earth and learning right from wrong actions helps others become good law-abiding citizens. Also, assisting the needs of the community helps to lessen the burden of hardships and brings peace to the heart and mind. We, at Masjid Al Islahi, believe that we should want for others what we want for ourselves and strive to achieve it.
